About Me

Poet by day, Boxer by night.

Greetings, I’m Matt ‘man’ Windle: Birmingham’s #PoetWithPunch.

Working full time across England as a spoken word poet to deliver workshops, performances & boxercise classes to schools, libraries, foster homes, young offenders, residential care homes and various other establishments whilst simultaneously fighting at a national level as a boxer. I have been fortunate enough to have also had the chance to work and fight abroad. I’ve fought for the Midland Counties & England select in Ireland – both north and south. – Worked at schools as far away as Indonesia and Malaysia whilst not forgetting performances that I have done in Germany and Austria.

I am a qualified ABA England boxing coach and I attempt to mix the unusual blend of boxing and poetry to break stereotypes and to prove that people can be as diverse & unique as they want to be.

There is no set age range as I have held workshops with reception children as young as 4 and with elderly residents in care homes, although I predominantly work with teenagers.

The benefits of my poetry workshops include:

  • Confidence building
  • Cooperation and teamwork skills
  • Breaking stereotypes (as does the boxercise)
  • Encourages performance
  • Improvement of writing ability
  • Giving young people an outlet and a voice
  • Enhancing vocabulary and rhyming skills
  • Having fun with English, words & poetry!!

(In the spring of 2014 I worked with 21, year 9, male students over a 6 week period that were all underachieving in English due to a lack of enthusiasm and confidence. By the end of the project, 16 of the 21 students were hitting or surpassing their predicted C grade target.)

The benefits of boxercise sessions are:

  • It teaches respect and discipline
  • Self-defence
  • Helps to build confidence
  • Encourages healthy eating
  • Improves fitness
  • Teaches that boxing is an art form, the same way that poetry is an art form
  • The rhythm, timing and beats used in poetry and boxing are the same
  • There’s a juxtaposition between poetry an boxing where two contrasting art forms can in fact share similar qualities

Past achievements include:

  • Birmingham Young Poet Laureate 2007/8
  • 2012 Olympic Torchbearer
  • A ‘face’ of the new Library of Birmingham
  • Tolkien cluster leadership awards winner
  • 4x Birmingham & Midland boxing champion in 3 different weight categories
  • Nationally ranked top 8 boxer

I have a fully advanced CRB/DBS certificate & public liability insurance.
